KUALA LUMPUR, 9 March 2026 – Following the enforcement of the Consumer Credit Act 2025 on 1 March 2026, the Consumer Credit Commission - Suruhanjaya Kredit Pengguna (SKP) today announced its first line-up of leadership, led by Executive Chairman, Encik Abu Hassan Alshari Yahaya, along with the Board Members.
This three-year appointment, made by the Minister of Finance, marks the official commencement of SKP's operations as the regulatory body responsible for overseeing consumer credit providers in Malaysia, with the objective of ensuring that lending practices are implemented transparently, fairly, and responsibly, in line with the mandate under the Consumer Credit Act 2025.
Encik Abu Hassan is a former Assistant Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) who headed the Consumer Credit Oversight Board Task Force, established in July 2021 to collaboratively draft the Consumer Credit Bill with relevant ministries and agencies. Previously, he led several key functions at BNM, including finance, currency management, strategic communications, and Centralized Support Services. He has extensive experience in banking supervision and served as Secretary to the Board of Directors during his career at BNM.
A Bachelor of Economics graduate from Monash University, Australia, he also held positions as a Board Member at the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM) and the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK).
Eight other SKP Board Members, as well as three alternate members, have also been appointed. These appointments include representatives from the Ministry of Finance (MOF), BNM, the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), as well as experienced professionals from the industry.

"The enactment of the Consumer Credit Act 2025 is an important step in the Government's reform agenda to strengthen consumer protection in the financial sector.
